Protecting Smiles From Tooth Decay All Summer Long

Summer break has arrived! While this is a fun time for kids and adults alike, summer can also mean an increased risk of eventual cavities. But we have a few helpful tips for protecting the smile! In today’s blog, Stubbs Family Dentistry talks about how we help protect smiles young and old all summer long.

Summertime Cavities

During the summer, for kids especially, there can be a higher risk of developing cavities! For kids, this is because they tend to stay up later and sleep in longer, which upsets their usual routine and can mean forgetting to brush and floss properly. That combined with increased snacking can lead to a higher risk of cavities, since most of these snacks contain sugar, and they often wash them down with soda, energy drinks, and sports drinks, all of which also contain sugar. When families head out on vacation, again the change in routine care means normal oral hygiene routines fall to the wayside. But we have a few tips for protecting smiles while still enjoying their break!

Brushing and Flossing

One vital way to protect smiles of all ages is with a steady and proper brushing and flossing routine! All ages need to start their day by brushing their teeth for two minutes with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a fluoride toothpaste. At night, they need to floss in between each and every tooth, and then brush a second time. These actions help remove the particles of sugar and starch that can lead to tooth decay and gingivitis. You also avoid bad breath and your teeth can stay brighter for longer periods!

Cutting Back on Sugar

Instead of sugary drinks, drink more water, so you stay hydrated and don’t expose your smile to harmful acids and sugars! If you do enjoy a soda, energy drink, or sports drinks, follow it with some water to help rinse away these particles. You should also avoid too many sweets and chips, and instead opt for fresh fruits and veggies. You can dip them in peanut butter, hummus, or cottage cheese too. You can try low-fat yogurts, sugar-free candy and gums, whole grain breads and crackers, and cheeses too.

Checkups and Cleanings

Summer is the perfect time to schedule your checkup and cleaning if you have not had one in the last six months. A visit now means the follow-up happens during winter break, so your kids avoid missing school. We can watch for signs of trouble and treat any issues that occur, such as tooth decay, and even clean the teeth to help protect the whole smile!
