Dental Emergencies During Your Summer Fun

Summer is here, and many of you and your kids will be playing sports and having fun during the break from school. But when a tooth ends up cracked, chipped, or knocked-out, then you need emergency dentistry and we can help! In today’s blog, your team at Stubbs Family Dentistry talks about emergency dental care for families in West Allis, WI.

How Teeth Become Damaged

When you are on the court or on the field, or if you box or practice martial arts, there is always the risk of injury to the face or jaw. Your teeth could be broken, cracked, or chipped, and even if minor injuries occur, this could lead to tooth decay and infection. Likewise, teeth could be full or partially avulsed (knocked-out) and there could be injuries to your orthodontics, restorations, or prosthetics. When a tooth is injured, you should take action and see our team for emergency dental care.

Taking Immediate Action

Call our office. If you reach us and we are open, we can see you same-day in some cases. If we are closed, then please leave a message so that we can reach out to you with possible appointment times. In the meantime, you should rinse with warm water and use cloth or a bit of gauze to stem the bleeding. Applying a cold compress or ice pack to the side of the face can also ease facial swelling. Try to avoid very hot or cold foods and drinks, or items high in sugar, as a compromised tooth is likely very sensitive.

You should try to recover any broken pieces if you can and bring them with you. If a tooth is knocked out fully, pick it up by the crown, not the roots, and put it in a sealed container of milk or salt water. Bring it with you to the office!

Emergency Dentistry From Our Team

Our team can help restore knocked-out teeth to their proper place in your smile. If you have a minor chip, then we could repair the tooth in one visit with a dental bonding procedure. If you have a fracture or more severe breakage, we could repair the tooth with a custom dental crown, one that looks natural and withstand daily bite forces. If a tooth is lost and cannot be restored to your bite, we could discuss options like a bridge to fill the gap and protect your smile from complications down the road. If you have any questions about emergency dentistry, then contact our team today.
