Do You Want A Brighter Smile?

shutterstock_63678880Unfortunately there are several factors that can stain your teeth and cause them to become discolored. The discoloration does get worse with age, but can often be treated through cosmetic dentistry. However, there are two different types of stains: those on the outer layer of your teeth (extrinsic), and those affecting the inner structure (intrinsic). Depending on the severity of discoloration, your dentist may recommend different cosmetic treatments. So, do you want a brighter smile? Often times, teeth whitening will do the trick – but for deeper stains or severe discoloration, you may want veneers or even a dental crown.

Exploring Teeth Whitening Treatments

What do you think of when you think of teeth whitening? Is it an in-office procedure with your dentist, or maybe a kit you can purchase over the counter? Let’s explore your different options for a brighter smile.

First and foremost, your best options are going to be an in-office procedure or take home whitening trays from your dentist. Unfortunately, the kits you can purchase over the counter can be harmful to your teeth, especially when used in excess. But, on the other hand, your dentist is able to monitor your treatment, minimizing any sensitivity and providing far better results.

In-Office Whitening Procedure

During an in-office teeth whitening, your dentist will apply a gel on the surface of your teeth. After all the teeth are covered, they’ll use a special light to activate the gel to begin whitening your teeth. Afterwards, the results are immediate! So, if you need quick results, an in-office procedure may be for you.

Take-Home Whitening Trays

The gel used with these trays is much stronger than what you would buy over the counter, but not quite as strong as what’s used in the office – but take-home whitening trays are convenient and cost effective. Although they take a little longer – typically a week – you can use them from the comfort of your own home.
