Even if you have healthy teeth and maintain good dental hygiene, you may struggle with dental discoloration, which can significantly affect your appearance and confidence. To lighten your smile and increase your self-assurance, Dr. Stubbs proudly offers highly effective at-home whitening treatment, which you can apply whenever it is most convenient for you. With our personalized care, you could enjoy a brighter smile in just a few weeks!

Understanding Dental Discoloration

There are two types of dental stains: extrinsic and intrinsic. Extrinsic stains are the most common type. Smoking, environmental factors, and genetics can all cause extrinsic stains, but food and drink are the most common reason for this type of discoloration. Dark-colored foods derive their hue from molecules called chromogens, which can get trapped inside the porous surface of your dental enamel. Acidic foods create tiny fissures inside your enamel, meaning there is more surface area for the chromogens to cling to. Fortunately, teeth whitening treatment can help to reduce or even completely eliminate these stains.

Intrinsic stains are located below the surface of your tooth. They are commonly the result of certain medication or medical conditions. Although teeth whitening cannot lighten intrinsic stains, Dr. Stubbs offers other cosmetic dentistry treatments, such as veneers, that can conceal this type of discoloration.

Our At-Home Whitening Treatment

Once Dr. Stubbs has determined that you are a candidate for teeth whitening, she will provide you with whitening trays made specifically to fit your teeth. You will fill the trays with a peroxide-based whitening gel and wear them every day, for approximately 30 to 45 minutes or as directed by your dentist. Typically, treatment lasts about two weeks, although this can vary depending on the severity of your stains. As you wear the trays, the whitening gel will permeate your dental enamel, breaking up the chemical bonds that hold stains together. After just two weeks, you could enjoy a dramatically whiter smile.

Maintaining Your Whiter Smile

Although teeth whitening is extremely effective in removing dental stains, the treatment will not prevent future discoloration. By taking a few simple steps, however, you can significantly prolong the results of your treatment:

  • Brush at least twice a day and floss at least once.
  • Avoid stain-producing food and drink such as berries, tomato sauce, soy sauce, hard candies, wine, coffee, and tea.
  • If you do choose to enjoy these foods, do so in moderation. Drink plenty of water at the same time and thoroughly rinse out your mouth when you are finished. Wait 30 minutes before brushing your teeth; otherwise, you will simply rub acid and bits of food into your soft enamel.
  • Ask Dr. Stubbs about touch-up treatments. She can provide you with extra whitening gel to help you maintain your brighter smile. You should only use this gel as directed, and typically you should perform touch-ups no more than twice a year.
